THIS EVENT HAS ENDED.
We are witnessing a global conflict, where the past is now one of the hottest culture-war battlefields. Historical monuments and symbols are vandalized, defaced or destroyed. Historical holidays, public places, buildings, schools, roads are being renamed, school curriculums are being “updated” and films are removed from shelves.
Some say history is the target of an ideological crusade by the social justice movement. Others say we have long overlooked the role of race and slavery in our history – a lapse for which the current events are intended to compensate or at least atone. The often fierce debate leads to social tension, polarization and division.
ReNEWS will discuss this global trend – and the role of the news media – with experts who help break down the issues, and with senior editors and journalists who discuss the practical issues of establishing context and background around socially incendiary issues.
We’ll be using the same format as in our first episode: 2-3 speakers who present a spectrum of views and perspectives, followed by a Reflection Panel of editors from around the world, considering the practical implications and possible ramifications for newsrooms. As always with ReNEWS, the lens through which we focus our conversations is newsrooms.
